About our Trees
Each Christmas tree species is unique. At Pioneer Trails Tree Farm, we have nine varieties of evergreens to choose from. Hopefully you will find the tree that best suits your family's needs.
Best pick for the 2008 season: Douglas Fir and Scotch Pine
Douglas Fir: This variety has a very soft needle about one inch long. Its medium green to bluish green color is attractive for decorations. The needles when rubbed have an orange fragrance. This year's selection includes a new field of 5 to 9 ft. tall Douglas fir, ranging from wide to slim. All are nicely shaped and very full.
Scotch Pine: The most popular Christmas tree in Ohio - this pine has dark to medium green color with firm branches. Needle retention is very good. This year's selection is 5 to 8ft. tall. A large new field is opening this year with over 500 trees to choose from.
Canaan Fir: A newer variety for Ohio, this single-needled tree is becoming very desirable as a Christmas tree. The needle has a bluish-green top with a silver-green bottom. Needle retention is good and branches are strong making decoration a delight. Tree size ranges from 5 to 10 ft. tall with a new field opening up this year. Canaan Fir was chosen most by customers last year, due to our large selection and outstanding evergreen scent.
Fraser Fir: This species is always in high demand but difficult to grow in Ohio due to our hot summers. This fir has a short, flat bottomed needle and has a dark green top and silvery bottom. This year's selection is 5 to 9 ft. tall and located on the "back hilltop" of the farm. The Fraser Fir trees are nicely shaped and range from narrow to wide. A classic Christmas tree with excellent needle retention and easily holds heavy ornaments.
Blue Spruce: This year trees are ranging from 5 to 8 ft. Most of our trees have needle color from light to dark blue. Thick dense limbs will hold heavy ornaments, though the needles are short and pinchy. We also have balled and burlap Blue Spruce available for Christmas trees, and can be planted later.
Norway Spruce: The shiny, dark green needles of this spruce make it an attractive Christmas tree. The single needles are short and prickly. Trees range in size from 6 to 10 ft. Norway Spruce look like an Old-fashion Christmas tree with its long swiping branches. Needle retention is considered fair and will last about 3 weeks.
White Spruce: This tree is easy to decorate with stiff branches. The short needles have a bluish-green color. Many of our 5 to 8 ft. trees are laced with tiny pinecones, which make the tree very attractive. Needles retention is only fair, so plan on setting this tree up in the house about 2-3 weeks before Christmas.
White Pine: This lacey-looking Christmas tree with its bright dark green color and excellent needle retention make it a popular tree. Young families like this tree because the needles are soft and not pinchy to young children. Needle retention is very good. Trees range in size from 5 to 9 ft. and are very full in appearance due to the long 3 inch needles. This tree is easy to decorate, however heavy ornaments or lights tend to pull down the soft branches. White Pine are a popular landscape tree and can be found around homes and developments.
Austrian Pine: This tree has long green needles that grow in bundles. The branches are stiff and will hold heavy ornaments and lights. Needle retention is excellent. Its natural growth habit allows it to be sheared to a variety of densities from quite open to extremely dense. Tree size available is 5 to 8 ft.
